The Allure of Advertisements

Several posts ago I expounded the many virtues of decorating with vintage posters - their versatility, an almost unlimited selection, endless categories, etc.  Today, I want to take that discussion even further by concentrating specifically on vintage advertising posters. 



Concentrating on a specific type of advertisement highlights the theme of a room or the design mood you are trying to achieve.  You're thinking, "Who can afford authentic, vintage posters?"  And, you're right.  Even though you will occasionally run across a true antique advertisement, they're rare and quite costly.  Prepare yourselves for the word of the day:  reproduction.  There.  I said typed it. 

Who wouldn't get a kick out of seeing a vintage

poster that advertised home kits for only $910?!







 If you're lucky enough to have a room dedicated to sewing or crafting, framed posters of vintage fashions or design make great wall coverings.

 
   Many famous, starving artists supplemented
   their incomes by painting advertising posters
   such as this one by Toulouse Lautrec.



The simple decoupage treatment
of applying a vintage poster to
an otherwise boring dresser
brings life and color to the room.



Even small advertisements serve to accent a grouping of collectibles.

Vintage air line and travel posters and early opera advertisements are immediate and colorful

reminders of favorite hobbies and interests.
